As promised, here is the pattern for my Norwegian Star hat. I think I have all the kinks worked out, so here we go.
US size 7 16" circ
Cascade 220 MC
Cascade 220 CC
Knit Picks Wool of the Andes also works well for this pattern.
CO 112 st
Knit in 1x1 ribbing for 3 1/2 inches.
Knit 5 rows.
Work chart.
Knit 10 rows.
Begin dec:
Round 1: *K6, K2tog*
Round 2: K
Round 3: *K5, K2tog*
Round 4: K
Continue in this manner until 14 st remain. Cut yarn, lace tail through live sts, pull tight, tie off on wrong side and weave in ends.
(Jan 19, 2010)ETA: Many Ravelers are finding that this pattern yields a very large hat. It is made to fit my 22" melon. If your head is smaller than mine (as it very likely is), I suggest you take other Ravelers' suggestions and CO 96 sts and work from there.

Thanks for the great pattern! I finished this up over the weekend!
Thanks so much for sharing the pattern. I'm going to give it a try - my first ever attempt at a pattern.
Happy Holidays!
Babs
I knitted the charted portion of this pattern twice with bad results. The chart does not indicated if you start row 1 from the left or the right. I knitted the odd rows right to left and the even rows left to right. I do not have a star pattern at all. This was my first charted pattern and I'm really disappointed the star pattern did not emerge. Please include directional chart instructions.
I have just knitted up this pattern, and it turned out beautifully!
Since this pattern is knit in the round, you always continue to follow the chart right to left. At the end of your first row, where your marker is, you begin again at the right for the second and then for the third, etc.
It has been like this for every pattern in the round, with a chart, that I have knit. I know this is almost two years after your comment so I hope you eventually had luck with your hat.
thank you
Ive started this pattern; just noticed that the ribb is 3 1/2 inches however wondering if I shouldnt rib 6 inches to allow for folding the rib in half when wearing..your picture shows the rib folded over.
